Budrys at the Kosciuszko Forum: 'Europe is the home of freedom and dignity seekers'
On 4 February, Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kęstutis Budrys, is participating in the Kościuszko Forum in Gdańsk, Poland. Minister Budrys took part in the forum's opening discussion titled "The European Aspirations of Our Eastern Neighbors and Russia's Imperial Policy: The Role of the West."
Speaking about the future of Belarus, the Foreign Minister stated that despite the country being trapped under Lukashenko's regime and subjugated by Russia, its European roots and desire to be part of Europe remain alive.
"Belarus's place is in Europe, but for it to return to the European path, the country must free itself from both the grip of dictator Lukashenko and Russia's influence. We must assist the democratic forces of Belarus in this journey because a democratic Belarus is crucial to the security of Lithuania and the entire region," said Budrys.
Minister Budrys urged Europe to preserve a place for Belarus in the European family. According to the Minister, it is essential to continue supporting Belarusian democratic forces, help preserve the Belarusian language and culture, and increase pressure on Lukashenko's regime. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of encouraging closer ties between a democratic Belarus and Europe.
"Europe is and must remain a home for those striving for freedom, dignity, and independence," said the Foreign Minister.
The Kościuszko Forum, taking place on 3-4 February, 2025, is focusing on the future of Belarus's democratic movement, the country's human rights situation, and the international community's role in supporting democratic progress. The forum is being organized by Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which currently holds the presidency of the EU Council.
