On 24 April, Bosnia and Herzegovina became the 44th member state of the Council of Europe (CoE). Opening the accession ceremony at the Palace of Europe in Strasbourg, CoE Secretary General Walter Schwimmer noted in his speech that the accession of Bosnia and Herzegovina to CoE starts a new phase in the history of the state.
Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis congratulated the consolidation process of the open multinational and democratic state and underscored its importance not only in promoting stability in the region but also in building a unified democratic Europe.
Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Beriz Belkić signed the European Convention of Human Rights and some of its protocols. At the ceremony, Bosnian and Herzegovinian Foreign Minister Zlatko Lagumdzija affirmed the readiness of the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina to implement CoE membership commitments and stressed the importance of CoE membership for the state’s consolidation.
