BILATERAL TRADE ISSUES DISCUSSED AT THE CONSULTATIONS OF LITHUANIAN AND CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRIES

On 17 December in Vilnius, bilateral political consultations of Foreign Ministries of Lithuania and China were held. Delegation led by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Oskaras Jusys met with the delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, headed by Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo.

During the consultations, important issues of bilateral relations between Lithuania and China were discussed, as well as further means of promoting development of mutual relations.

Wu Hongbo thanked Lithuania for active participation of its representatives in the Beijing Olympics. While speaking about economic and trade relations, representatives from Foreign Ministries highlighted the steady growth of bilateral trade.

During the consultations, China was encouraged to make more use of the situation of Lithuania as a transit country. The delegations discussed means of reaping the benefits of the possibilities that the Klaipėda Seaport might provide for transporting goods from China.

Representatives from China invited Lithuania to take an active part in the World Expo Shanghai 2010 and to take an opportunity to present its goods to the Chinese market.

O.Jusys thanked Wu Hongbo for the decision of the Government of People's Republic of China to support the Lithuanian initiative to organise the Meeting of Transport Ministers of Europe and Asia Meeting (ASEM) in Lithuania in 2009, and for the support while preparing for this meeting.

During the consultations, the reform of the United Nations Security Council and efforts of an international community to tackle climate change were discussed Interlocutors talked about further cooperation in international organisations.

Bilateral political consultations of Foreign Ministries of Lithuania and China have been organised regularly since 2002.

In 2007, the trade turnover between Lithuania and China was 1772,3 million Litas. Balance of trade was negative and amounted to 1666,3 million Litas. In 2008, during the first half-year the trade turnover was 884,66 million Litas, balance of trade was negative and amounted to 809,54 million Litas.
