On 3 May, a bilateral meeting of Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis and Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium, Foreign Minister Luis Michel took place in Vilnius.
The chief of the Belgian diplomacy expressed Belgium's support for Lithuania's membership in the EU and NATO. According to the Belgian Foreign Minister, some are worrying about EU enlargement consequences but their worry is ungrounded.
Luis Michel also noted an active and constructive participation of the candidate states in the Convention on the future of the EU.
Foreign Minister Valionis thanked Belgium for the support of Lithuania's integration goals and representation of small countries' interests at the EU Summit in Nice, in December 2000. The chief of the Lithuanian diplomacy drew attention to the fact that Lithuania expected EU support in the decommissioning of Ignalina's NPP.
"I understand well the issue of Ignalina NPP and I think that a solution will be found", said the Belgian Foreign Minister.
At the meeting Minister Valionis also spoke on Lithuania's relations with neighbouring countries, noting that constructive co-operation with the Russian Federation and its Kaliningrad Region is taking place.
