BELARUSIAN EXILE STUDENTS RALLY IN LITHUANIA

At the rally of the United Students of Belarus on 18 September, Undersecretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Laimonas Talat-Kelpša expressed his satisfaction that this event was would be taking place in Lithuania, which traditionally was an assembly place for various nations and cultures, open for free discussions. The United Students of Belarus (USB) is a community of Belarusians studying abroad.

‘In my opinion, your organisation has a potential to become not only a student rally, but a community of like-minded Belarusian people, who would want to and would be able to change their country. Once you take over all the best practice of those countries where you are studying, you should be ready to use this experience in Belarus and to contribute to its openness and democratization. I trust that you will serve as a link between the new Belarus and Europe,’ said L.Talat-Kelpša.

During a Belarusian students rally last year in Lithuanian, a decision was made to establish a community “The United Students of Belarus” and to organise regular rallies of Belarusian students in Lithuania.

On 18-20 September,  40 Belarusian students, who study at higher education institutions in Austria, Belarus, Estonia, the Czech Republic, the U.S.A., Poland, France, Sweden, Ukraine, Germany and at the European Humanities University in Vilnius, are taking part in the rally.

The participants are discussing the issues of education based on civic ideas, important matters of Lithuania and Belarus, Belarusian identity and perspectives of activities of the community “United Students of Belarus”.

The event was organized by the Eastern Europe Studies Centre (EESC) and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
