BALTIC STATES EXPRESSED THEIR APPRECIATION FOR TURKISH AIR POLICING MISSION
On 4 April Lithuanian Ambassador to Turkey Vytautas Naudužas together with Latvian Ambassador Ivar Pundur and Estonian Ambassador Mart Volmer accredited to Turkey met with the Minister of Defence of Turkey Veedi Gonul and the Commander of the Turkish Armed Forces Hilmi Ozkok and expressed appreciation for Turkey’s participation in air policing mission of the Baltic airspace.
During the meetings the Ambassadors of the Baltic States and Turkish officials discussed the importance of NATO missions in the Baltic States and possibilities of future protection of the Baltic airspace.
On 31 March Turkish Air Forces took over NATO Baltic States’ air policing mission. Four Turkish F-16 fighters stationed in Zuokniai will stay on the mission for four months.
NATO air policing mission started in the end of March 2004. Since then the Baltic airspace has been protected by Belgian, Danish, British, U.S., Polish, Dutch, Norwegian and German soldiers.
