Baltic States’ consultations focus on security policy, Eastern Partnership and migration
Political consultations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania on 15 October. During the meeting, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Andrius Krivas, the Estonian Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary for Political Affairs Kyllike Sillaste-Elling and the Latvian State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andrejs Pildegovič discussed relevant security policy issues, the European Union’s Eastern Partnership and migration.
The participants voiced support for the ongoing reforms in Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, and the countries’ EU integration endeavours. The Baltic diplomats noted that Russia’s political and military activity posed threats to peace and stability. They highlighted the need to fully implement the Minsk agreements on the settlement of the conflict in Donbas and the decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Wales that strengthened the region’s security, as well as to preserve the territorial integrity of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
The countries adjusted their positions in preparation for important political events: the Valletta Summit in November, the planned summit of the member countries of NATO from Central and Eastern Europe in Bucharest, the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in December, the next NATO summit in 2016, etc.
The consultations of the Baltic States are held once a year.
