Baltic Foreign Ministers meet with Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, leadership of Senate Committee on Foreign Relations

On 28 March, the three Baltic Foreign Ministers met with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Paul Ryan, the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Senator Bob Corker and the Committee Ranking Member, Senator Ben Cardin.

Minister Linkevičius thanked the U.S. Congress for its continued support to the Baltic states’ goals after the restoration of independence.

The meeting discussed security challenges facing the Baltic region and the whole of Europe, as well as the situation in Ukraine. According to the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Congress demonstrates strong support for strengthening NATO’s eastern flank. The Senators assured that both parties in the new U.S. Congress would consistently support the Baltic countries’ goals of protecting their democratic institutions against cyber-attacks and of countering Russia’s malicious propaganda. All sides agreed that sanctions against Russia must be maintained until the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Meetings of the Foreign Ministers with the President Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster and the Chairman of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee Bill Thornberry are scheduled for tomorrow.
