Baltic Council meeting in Tallinn focuses on regional security, transatlantic relations and Ukraine
On 23 October, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus attended the 32nd session of the Baltic Council in Tallinn.
At the session, Mitkus presented the priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers in 2027: a secure and resilient Baltic region; a competitive, connected and future-ready Baltic region; and a stronger Baltic voice in Europe and continued support for Ukraine. The importance of close cooperation and coordination among the Baltic states within the European Union and NATO was emphasised, particularly in view of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027.
“The Baltic states face the same security threats, share common concerns and have a common interest in acting together. Close coordination, mutual trust and the ability to take joint decisions in a timely manner have become the essential foundations of cooperation among the Baltic states,” Mitkus said.
During the session, the traditional Baltic Council statement was adopted, taking stock of cooperation among the Baltic states in 2026 and setting out guidelines for cooperation in the coming year.
Estonia holds the Presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers in 2026, with Lithuania taking over the Presidency in 2027.
The Baltic Council is an annual joint session of the Baltic Assembly, which brings together representatives of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian parliaments, and the Cooperation Council of the Baltic Council of Ministers, comprising the foreign ministers of the three Baltic states. The session addresses issues of common interest concerning cooperation among the Baltic states and sets out guidelines for cooperation in the coming year.
