BALTIC COOPERATION ISSUES DISCUSSED IN VILNIUS

At the session of the Baltic Council on 9 June in Vilnius, the Foreign Ministers of the three Baltic States and the members of the Baltic Assembly Presidium exchanged their opinions on the trilateral model of the interparliamentary and intergovernmental cooperation in the context of the future membership in the EU. The same day a separate meeting between Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian Foreign Ministers Antanas Valionis, Sandra Kalniete and Kristiina Ojuland took place, during which the reform of the Baltic Council of Ministers (BCM), the course of the Lithuanian chairmanship in the organisation and other topical foreign policy issues were discussed. As Minister Valionis indicated at the meeting, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were currently preparing the reforms of the BCM based on the guidelines worked-out during the meeting of 15 January in Estonia and considering the future membership in the EU. The decisions on the reforms should be ready for signing at the meeting of the Baltic Prime Ministers in September. The Minister also thanked the Presidium and the Secretariat of the Baltic Assembly for the initiative and efforts in preparing the new model of cooperation between the BCM and the Baltic Assembly.
