AUSTRALIA GROUP ISSUES A STATEMENT OF CONCERN REGARDING SYRIAN CHEMICAL WEAPONS
On 28 January, the Australia Group and Lithuania, as its member, issued the Statement of Concern Regarding Syrian Chemical Weapons. The Australia Group calls upon the Syrian Government to renounce the use of chemical or biological weapons under any circumstances and eliminate all such weapons forthwith. The group urges Syria to join the Chemical Weapons Convention and ratify the Biological Weapons Convention without further delay.
The Australia Group is an informal forum of 41 countries which, through the harmonisation of export controls, seeks to ensure that exports do not contribute to the development of chemical or biological weapons. Coordination of national export control measures assists Australia Group participants to fulfil their obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention to the fullest extent possible. Lithuania joined the group on 26 May 2004.
