At UN Security Council meeting Lithuania expressed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity
On February 28, the United Nations Security Council held an urgent meeting to discuss situation in Ukraine. After the private meeting and consultations Ambasaador Raimonda Murmokaitė, Lithuania‘s Permanent Representative to the UN, acting in her national capacity as a representative of Lithuania, delivered the following statement to the press:
“We wish to express deep concern about the situation and the outbreak of violence in Crimea, Ukraine.
We express our strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
We call on Ukraine’s foreign partners to abide by international law and to respect sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of the country.
During the discussions we reminded of the obligation to observe bilateral and multilateral agreements by all parties, including the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Ukraine, and the Ukrainian - Russian 31 May 1997 agreement.
We reiterated the obligation of all UN members to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations”.
