At UN Security Council, Lithuania voices solidarity with France in fight against terrorism
At the United Nations Security Council in New York on 20 November, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN, Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė stressed Lithuania’s unequivocal commitment to continue supporting the fight against terrorism.
“The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė reaffirmed once again today that we were members of the coalition against ISIL and that we unambiguously supported and would continue supporting the fight against ISIL. Lithuania voices its solidarity with France and its people, who in the wake of the tragedy kept saying ‘We shall not live in fear’. We feel the pain of all affected by violence and massacre of ISIL, Boko Haram and other terrorist groups,” said Murmokaitė.
The UN Security Council unanimously adopted the Resolution 2249 on combating terrorism. The Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN called for a critical evaluation of the effectiveness of the fight against terrorism. She emphasized that all parts of the counter-terrorism system, both within and outside the United Nations, must work as one, from assessment to assistance. A breakthrough was also urgently needed in tackling the financing of terrorism and in preventing possible radicalisation of people.
The UN Security Council adopted the resolution on combating the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant/Sham (ISIL/ISIS). The UN Security Council determined that ISIL constituted an “unprecedented” threat to international peace and security, calling upon member states with the requisite capacity to take “all necessary measures” to prevent and suppress terrorist acts.
