At the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva, Lithuania offered human rights recommendations to Sudan

At the 40th session of the Working Group of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on 9 February in Geneva, Lithuania offered human rights recommendations to Sudan.

Lithuania expressed its deep concern about the power take-over by military authorities, and underscored its support for the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people.

“We urge Sudanese leadership to recommit to the country’s peaceful transition, return to civilian rule and hold those responsible for human rights violations to account”, - said the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN office and other International Organisations in Geneva Ambassador Darius Staniulis.

Lithuania recommended Sudan to organise free and fair elections and to initiate investigations into allegations of crimes under international law. Furthermore, Lithuania recommended Sudan to ensure the protection of civilians, especially in conflict affected areas such as Darfur and South Kordofan, and to investigate attacks against, and harassment of journalists, media workers and human rights defenders, and ensure freedom of expression.

The Universal Periodic Review is a human rights mechanism that has been in place since 2008. It is considered to be one of the most successful forms of action of the United Nations Human Rights Council, ensuring equal treatment of all states. It aims to assess the overall human rights situation in each United Nations Member State, making recommendations on ensuring human rights and raising questions about continuing human rights violations. The UPR is conducted every five years and shall be open to all Members of the United Nations.
