AT THE SOLEMN EVENT MARKING THE BEGINING OF MASS DEPORTATIONS IN RUMŠIŠKĖS, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING MEMORIES OF THE EXILES
On 11 June at the Open Air Museum of Lithuania in Rumšiškės, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė attended the event that was organized by the Lapteviečiai, the brotherhood of the Laptev Sea exiles.
The event was intended to honour the memory of the victims of the first mass deportations of Lithuanian citizens on 14 June 1941 and of other victims of the totalitarian regimes.In his speech, the Vice-Minister reminded of Lithuanian diplomats of the interwar period who were repressed during the first Soviet occupation and stressed their determination to carry out the oath to work for Lithuania even in exile.
“I believe that we can join efforts and achieve a lot. The preservation of the remembrance of deportations – it is not just a question of historical memory. This national tragedy has affected every family, thus keeping alive the remembrance of deportations is, firstly, our responsibility,” the Vice-Minister said.
The 2011 has been declared as the Year of Remembrance of Defence of Freedom and of Great Losses in Lithuania.
