At the OSCE Permanent Council Lithuania rejected Russia’s accusation of serious human rights violations

On 24 June 2021, in Vienna, at the Permanent Council of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Lithuania rejected Russia’s accusation of serious human rights violations. Lithuania’s representative informed the Council about her country’s commitment to a policy of zero tolerance towards anti-Semitism, racism, intolerance, xenophobia and other manifestations of hate. She also reaffirmed that the rights of national minorities in Lithuania are guaranteed by the Constitution and that its laws fully conform to its international commitments. Lithuania also actively promotes media freedom and freedom of expression, and strictly adheres to international commitments in this area.

Lithuania’s representative highlighted how Russia consistently pursues a distorted narrative of the events of January 13th 1991 and routinely attempts to discredit Lithuania’s judicial system, accusing it of politically motivated prosecutions. She also spoke against any distortion of the memory of the anti-Soviet resistance movement and its members.

The representative concluded that political dialogue, building of trust and co-operation within and between states cannot be achieved through the distortion of historical facts and by provoking doubt and division.
