AT THE OPENING OF THE HOUSE OF UNITED BELARUS, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER CALLED ON CIVIL SOCIETY IN BOTH COUNTRIES TO WORK TOGETHER FOR THE SAKE OF BELARUS

On 28 June at the opening of the House of United Belarus (HUB) in Vilnius, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis called on Lithuanian and Belarusian non-governmental organizations, academicians and intellectuals to make use of this house, assemble there and implement cultural and scientific projects for the sake of Belarus together.

According to Minister A.Ažubalis, Lithuania and Belarus share centuries of common historical experience, Lithuanians and Belarusians together have been through better time, also through the occupation and exile. Therefore, the Minister believes that this initiative should help Belarusians respond to the current situation in their country.

“I hope that the House of United Belarus in Vilnius will become second home for Belarusians in exile. I wish that it would really be the place, where representatives from Belarusian non-governmental organizations could focus on work,” Minister A.Ažubalis noted.

The House of United Belarus in Vilnius will be financed by the Democracy and Development Assistance Fund. The Eastern Europe Studies Centre established the Fund in 2007. The House of United Belarus in Vilnius intends to organize monthly meetings of the club of Friends of Belarus, also cultural and scientific events.

The HUB in Vilnius is a project that brings together representatives from the Belarusian political and civil opposition in Lithuania.

Currently, the Democracy and Development Assistance Fund is also implementing freedom and democracy development programmes for Belarus.
