AT THE CONFERENCE IN BERLIN, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF SUBSIDIARITY FOR THE FUNCTIONING OF THE EU

When speaking at the 6th Subsidiarity Conference on 18 December in Berlin, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Vytautas Leškevičius on behalf of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council highlighted the relevant issues of the European Union’s institutions, democratic legitimacy and subsidiarity.

“Subsidiarity means recognising that we need to promote active citizen engagement in the EU decision-making process,” V.Leškevičius said in his welcome address to the participants of the Conference.

According to the Vice-Minister, these issues are of particular importance as we mark the European Year of Citizens 2013 and prepare for the 2014 European Parliament elections.

The Conference this year presents an opportunity to assess the status and impact of the principle of subsidiarity on EU law-making in the post-Lisbon context. It provides an occasion to evaluate subsidiarity monitoring from different perspectives in the past and future.

The Biennial Conference brought together representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Committee of the Regions, national and regional parliaments, and academics.

The Conference is co-organised by the Committee of the Regions of the European Union and the German Bundesrat.
