At OSCE human rights event, Lithuania initiates discussion on media manipulation and propaganda in the context of aggression against Ukraine

At the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting 2014 of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Warsaw on 23 September, Lithuania, in cooperation with the United States of America, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Ukraine and the international non-governmental organization Freedom House, is organising a discussion on media freedom in the context of aggression against Ukraine.

The Lithuania-initiated event will discuss the situation of press freedom and the safety of journalists in the occupied region of Crimea and in eastern Ukraine. Special attention will be given to the use by Russia of its state-controlled media to disseminate propaganda, to deepen the conflict and to instigate ethnic discord in Ukraine.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović, Head of Board of the Information Press Centre in Simferopol Valentyna Samar, Director of the Mohyla School of Journalism in Kyiv Yevhen Fedchenko, Director of the Institute for Mass Information in Kyiv Oksana Romanyuk and representative from the Levada Center in Moscow Denis Volkov will take part in the discussion moderated by the President of Freedom House David Kramer.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović has repeatedly condemned the ongoing harassment of journalists and restrictions on freedom of expression in Crimea, a territory occupied by Russia, and in eastern Ukraine, as well as media manipulation to disseminate propaganda.

The Human Dimension Implementation Meeting, the OSCE’s largest human rights and democracy conference, is organized every year in Warsaw as a platform for the OSCE participating States to take stock of the implementation of the human dimension commitments, discuss associated challenges, share good practices and make recommendations for further improvements. This year’s event focuses on violations of the OSCE’s key commitments in the context of aggression against Ukraine. The Lithuanian delegation will be led by Ambassador Giedrius Čekuolis, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the OSCE.
