AT LITHUANIA’S EMBASSY IN LATVIA, THE OSCE ELECTION OBSERVATION MISSION REVIEWED THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS
As Lithuania takes over the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011, on 4 October at Lithuania’s Embassy in Latvia head of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) limited election observation mission Nikolai Vulchanov presented the observation results to the heads of 32 diplomatic representations and a mission in Riga.
In N.Vulchanov’s estimation, parliamentary elections to the Saeima of Latvia were peaceful, without any major violations and met the OSCE requirements.A total number of 1013 polling-stations were opened for the elections to the Saeima, 64 of them abroad. 13 parties and political alliances ran in the elections. According to the data of the Central Election Commission, the turnout reached 62.62 per cent.
In N.Vulchanov’s opinion, the fact that 17 percent of the country’s non-citizen residents of voting age have no suffrage rights remains a challenge for Latvia. Latvia has a population of 2.2 million, and 1.5 million of them have suffrage rights.
