ART PHOTOGRAPHER ANTANAS SUTKUS RECEIVES THE STAR OF LITHUANIA’S MILLENNIUM
On 14 December in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas conferred “The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium”, the award of honour of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on photographer Antanas Sutkus for his merits of promoting the name of Lithuania in the world. As the Minister said during the ceremony at the Foreign Ministry, this award is dedicated to the artist’s work, talent and meaningful activities. Minister V.Ušackas wished the photographer to harvest many creative ideas in the future.
“Your photos help us to find a way to the hearts and minds of Westerners and Easterners,” the Minister said.
In his speech, A.Sutkus noted that the Lithuanian representations abroad promoted the Lithuanian photography successfully. According to him, many initiatives of the Lithuanian photographers were implemented abroad with the help of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Lithuanian photographer A.Sutkus was born in 1939. He has received the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize and is one of the co-founders of the Union of the Lithuanian Art Photographers. The photographer has published ten photo albums and held a lot of solo exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. He has written dozens of articles, publications and books on photography. A.Sutkus focuses on portraying people in their everyday life. His monochrome art belongs to the trend of humanistic photography on social themes and psychological portraits. Among his most famous works of art there are: “Pioneer” (1964) and the series “Jean-Paul Sartre in Lithuania” (1969), which were displayed in many world galleries.
