ANOTHER TWO EXPERTS FROM JAPAN WILL JOIN THE LITHUANIAN-LED PROVINCIAL RECONSTRUCTION TEAM IN AFGHANISTAN
On 21 May at the Lithuanian Embassy in Tokyo, another two Japanese development cooperation experts were seen off to the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor province, Afghanistan. On the whole, Japan is sending four experts to this province which is one of the most undeveloped ones in Afghanistan.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
According to Japanese diplomats, Ghor province was chosen also because of good relations of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team with the local residents, the authorities and nongovernmental organisations.
Since 2007, Lithuania has been cooperating with Japan in the area of development cooperation. In 2007-2009 20 development cooperation projects are being implemented in Ghor province with the financial support from Japan’s government and assistance of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team. This makes up almost 50 percent of the projects that are financed by Japan’s government in the provinces of Afghanistan, where Provincial Reconstruction Teams are functioning.
Lithuania has been leading its Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor province since 2005. Currently development cooperation activities in the province are coordinated by the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan, in cooperation with representatives, delegated to the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor province from the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL).
Delegating Japanese civilians to the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team arouses big interest in Japan’s society.
