ANOTHER IMPORTANT LEGAL STEP TAKEN TO IMPLEMENT THE VISAGINAS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT PROJECT
On 29 November, Lithuania and Japan exchanged diplomatic notes, defining conditions for the transfer of nuclear technology to Lithuania.
Upon the exchange of notes, the Government of Lithuania undertakes to use the nuclear technology that is being imported to the Visaginas nuclear power plant for peaceful purposes only and not to transfer it to third parties without the consent of the exporting party, in this case, Japan. The diplomatic notes were prepared in accordance with the requirements as set out in the official documents of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
This another important legal step assures the continuation of negotiations with the strategic investor and establishes prerequisites for a timely signing of the concession agreement on the construction of the new nuclear power plant and other agreements.
These agreements with the strategic investor “Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy” are scheduled for signing during the transition from 2011 to 2012. At the same time, a shareholders’ agreement with the electric power companies of Latvia, Estonia and Poland should be signed.
It is planned that with the participation of the strategic investor and regional partners – the electric power companies of Latvia, Estonia and Poland – the regional Visaginas nuclear power plant will have been built by 2020.
