AN INFORMAL DISCUSSION OF EUROPEAN AND NORTH AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY STRATEGISTS IS ORGANISED IN LITHUANIA

On 15-16 January in Trakai, an informal meeting of European and North American strategists - politicians, political scientists, diplomats and analysts - is being organised at the invitation of Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas. Participants of the meeting will discuss main strategic challenges, which the European Union and NATO, the U.S.A. and Europe will be facing this year.

Over 30 high-ranking strategists from Europe and North America accepted the invitation. Among the guests there are: Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden Carl Bildt, Canada’s Minister of National Defence Peter Gordon MacKay, high-ranking officials from the European Union institutions, opinion makers and scholars from institutes of political research. The Czech EU Presidency, Estonia, Great Britain, the U.S.A., Latvia, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Romania and Germany will be represented at high level.

The goal of this gathering is to consolidate debates and to come up with suggestions for leaders of the Euro-Atlantic community regarding a united NATO and EU’s policy on the most important issues of international relations: NATO before its anniversary Summit, the perspective of the European Neighbourhood in the East and a possibility to support this initiative on a broader transatlantic dimension, development of ideas on a united pragmatic and principled policy towards Russia, drawing up a common agenda of Europe and the new U.S. administration on essential issues.

“The fact that so many thinkers of worldwide reputation accepted the invitation, gives evidence that Lithuania is acknowledged and valued in Europe and America as a reliable and smart organizer of strategic discussions, and that there is a great demand for such discussions in the Euro-Atlantic community,” said Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs V.Ušackas.
