On 15 November, Ambassador Neris Germanas, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the Council of Europe, signed on behalf of Lithuania in Strasbourg Protocol amending the European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism.
The European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism was adopted in 1977. The necessity to amend the Convention arose after events of 11 September, 2001.
The protocol amending the Convention was adopted in Strasbourg on 15 May, 2003.
The protocol aims at tightening measures against terrorism and revises the mechanism of reservations. Up to now, members of the convention had more opportunities to make reservations and thus not apply certain provisions of the document.
The protocol amending the European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism was signed by 41 member states of the Council of Europe, and has been ratified by seven states.
