Ambassador Marcinkevičius presented his credentials to the Director-General of UNESCO
On 16 September, at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, Gytis Marcinkevičius, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Delegate of Lithuania to UNESCO, presented his credentials to UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany.
During the meeting, Ambassador Marcinkevičius discussed the UNESCO Director-General’s visit to Ukraine last month and emphasized that, as Russian attacks on the population and civilian infrastructure intensify, the organization’s support and principled stance on Ukraine are more important than ever.
As part of UNESCO’s 80th-anniversary reform efforts, the need to strengthen UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector was affirmed, with its primary goal being to promote freedom of expression and ensure universal access to reliable information. Lithuania was elected to the Global Media Protection Fund (GMPF) Board for the 2026–2027 term.
While discussing Lithuania’s upcoming agenda at UNESCO, the Permanent Delegate highlighted the inclusion of Vilnius Easter palms and the joint Christmas Eve tradition with Poland and Ukraine on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as well as Lithuania’s candidacy for the World Heritage Committee for the 2027–2031 term.
Lithuania became a member of UNESCO on 7 October 1991. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Gytis Marcinkevičius is Lithuania’s sixth representative to UNESCO. The ceremony for the presentation of credentials officially marks the beginning of his diplomatic mission to UNESCO.
