Ambassador Irnius presented his letters of credence to the Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization

On 2 October, the Ambassador of Lithuania to Spain, Tomas Irnius, presented his letters of credence to Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

During the meeting with the UNWTO Secretary-General, the Ambassador highlighted Lithuania's active engagement in the organization. On April 2 this year, the Ministry of Economy and Innovation signed an agreement with the UNWTO on implementing a more active action plan to increase inbound tourism to Lithuania. The agreement aims to enhance the effectiveness of local marketing in the regions, organize more joint tourism education projects, and promote start-ups in the tourism sector.

Lithuania was elected and will hold the position of Vice-President for the European region at the UNWTO General Assembly, which will take place on 7-11 November 2025, in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). Lithuania also serves as Vice-Chair of the UNWTO European Regional Commission for 2025-2027 and was nominated as a member of the UN Tourism Working Group for the Agenda for Europe for the 2025–2027 period. The meeting also addressed the upcoming plans for cooperation between Lithuania and the UNWTO in the areas of tourism investment and sustainable tourism promotion.

The UNWTO brings together 160 member states and over 500 affiliate members. Its headquarters are located in Madrid. The priorities of the UNWTO include enhancing the socio-economic value of tourism, putting tourism on the global agenda, promoting  sustainable tourism, increasing competitiveness, disseminating knowledge, and building capacity. Lithuania joined the UNWTO in 2003.
