AMBASSADOR GREETINGS (Lithuania today, 2008 issue 12, p.28-31)
Christmas is a time with family, creating joyous memories and delighting in succulent food. Wherever we are, Loreta and I always seek to honour Lithuanian Christmas traditions and pass them on to our own two children, daughter Paula and son Raimundas.
The best Christmas is when we can celebrate it with our parents at home in Lithuania. Many Lithuanians living abroad dream about this, however, it is not always possible and not everyone can come home for Christmas. Therefore, when I was an Ambassador in Washington and later in London, my staff and I were organising Christmas events for local Lithuanian communities at the Embassy. At least in s
uch a symbolic way we could feel closer bonds with our homeland and foster Lithuanian unity and solidarity.
On the occasion of the coming Christmas and New Year, I would like to wish us all, both in Lithuania and elsewhere around the world, to make a firm resolution to build a country where justice would reign, truth would triumph and people would prosper.
May this Christmas be cheerful and bright and let the New Year bring you and your families happiness and prosperity!
Vygaudas Ušackas, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania
