Ambassador Eitvydas Bajarūnas presents his letters of credence to the President of Portugal

On 30 March, the Ambassador of Lithuania Eitvydas Bajarūnas presented his letters of credence to the President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Thus, Bajarūnas officially became Lithuania's Ambassador to Portugal.

During his visit to Portugal, Bajarūnas met with the General Secretary of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Francisco Ribeiro Telles, Director-General for Foreign Policy, Ambassador Rui Vinhas, honorary consuls of Lithuania and representatives of the Lithuanian community in Portugal.

Since establishing diplomatic relations, Lithuania and Portugal have enjoyed relations based on goodwill and mutual understanding through international cooperation. As an ally of Lithuania in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, Portugal has contributed significantly to the security of the Baltic region. The country has deployed rotational troops and equipment to Lithuania since 2015 and conducted NATO's Air Policing mission in the Baltic states.

On 3 May of this year, Lithuania will mark the centenary of establishing diplomatic relations with Portugal. On 26 August 1991, Portugal recognised the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania de jure. On 4 October 1991, the countries reestablished their diplomatic relations.
