On 8 June, Ambassador Aurelijus Zykas, Ambassador of Lithuania to Japan, presented his letters of credence to the President of the Republic of Palau, Surangel S. Whipps Jr., becoming the first Ambassador of Lithuania accredited to the Republic of Palau.
In his address delivered before the President of Palau and representatives of the Council of Chiefs, the National Congress, and the Government, the Ambassador highlighted the similarities between the two countries and the importance of unity:
“In the current geopolitical environment, small states must stand even more united than before in order to preserve the status quo and uphold a rules-based international order,” he said. “Despite the geographic distance, Lithuania feels it has like-minded partners in the Pacific region.”
During the meeting with the President of Palau, discussions focused on support for Ukraine, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, cybersecurity, energy independence, cooperation in international organizations, and other topical issues.
During his visit to Palau this week, the Ambassador also plans to meet with representatives of Palau’s education, economic, and digitalization agencies.
Palau is the second Pacific island state to which Lithuania’s Ambassador to Japan is accredited. In 2025, the Ambassador was also accredited to the Federated States of Micronesia. Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Palau were established in 2013.
