AGRICULTURE, TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS ARE KEY SPHERES OF COOPERATION BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND KAZAKHSTAN
Continuing his official visit to Kazakhstan, on 9 June in Almaty, Lithuania‘s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas together with Lithuanian Minister for Agriculture Kazimieras Starkevičius opened a business forum of Lithuania and Kazakhstan.
The forum was also attended by the delegation of Lithuanian businessmen who accompanied Minister V.Ušackas to Kazakhstan.
In his welcome speech, the Minister noted that during his meeting with Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Karim Massimov on 8 June, main guidelines for economic cooperation between Lithuania and Kazakhstan were outlined – namely, they are agriculture, transport and logistics.
“This business forum gathered together mostly representatives of these particular sectors, therefore in the nearest future we can expect concrete results and business contacts”, Minister V.Ušackas said.
The Minister invited the participants of the business forum who represent transport and logistics sectors to attend the Asia-Europe Transport Development Forum which is organized on 19 October in Vilnius in the framework of the first ASEM Transport Minister's Meeting.
Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Management Board of Kazakhstan‘s National Innovation Fund JSC (Samiuk-Kazyna) Auyelbek Tokzhanov discussed possibilities to attract investments to Lithuania‘s science and innovation technologies companies.
One of the forum organizers, Director General of the International Chamber of Commerce ICC Lithuania Algimantas Akstinas said that such discussions on the cooperation between governmental institutions and business representatives in the countries like Kazakhstan are especially useful and fruitful.
10 Lithuanian and 15 Kazakh businessmen attend the forum, they represent the businesses of transport and logistics, dairy and food production, furniture manufacturing. Representatives of governmental institutions of both countries also participate in the forum.
Kazakhstan is the biggest trade partner of Lithuania in the region. In 2008, foreign trade between Lithuania and Kazakhstan increased by 8.3 per cent (as compared to the data of 2007) and amounted to 1 128.8 million Litas (326.9 million Euros).
