AFTER IRAN‘S PROTEST OVER CARTOONS REPRINTED IN “RESPUBLIKA” NEWSPAPER FOREIGN MINISTRY AND STATE SECURITY DEPARTMENT DISCUSSED STRENGTHENING OF LITHUANIAN CITIZENS’ SAFETY
On 9 February Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a diplomatic note from the Islamic Republic of Iran concerning cartoon publication in Lithuanian press.
The note states that cartoons printed in several European countries’ press and reprinted in “Respublika” newspaper on 8 February, provoked a wave of great indignation of Islam believers all over the world.
The note also stresses that based on highly valuable teachings of Islam, respect to all divine prophets and sanctities of all religions are considered as firm commitment by all Muslims throughout the world. Therefore, the freedom of press should not be used as a pretext to insult other religions' faiths. All Muslims express their protest to this kind of actions by any individual or group.
Lithuanian Foreign Ministry expresses its respect to religious beliefs of every individual, but disapproves any action against the freedom of press, therefore rejects the charges against Lithuania.
Yesterday Lithuanian Foreign Ministry and State Security Department held a meeting on the measures that are necessary to ensure Lithuanian citizens’ safety inside the country and abroad.
