AFRICA PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION OPENS AT THE LITHUANIAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
On 24 May, on the eve of Africa Day, the photography exhibition “Africa through the Eyes of Lithuanian Diplomats” was opened at the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Many of the displayed photos were taken in African countries, where Lithuanian diplomats monitored elections. The participation of Lithuanian diplomats in the EU Election Observation Missions is our specific contribution to ensuring democratic governance in Africa,” Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė said at the opening of the exhibition.
The Vice-Minister stressed that Lithuania joined the EU in 2004 and is taking part in the decision-making process regarding African countries, aiming to ensure peace and stability in the continent, democratic governance and respect for human rights, create infrastructure for regional integration, expand trade ties, increase employment and create an information society.
“Today, African countries make different influence on the world’s political, economic and social development than in the past, they enjoy membership in the United Nations and other international organizations and their voice is heard when making important global decisions. Many changes are taking place in the African continent, as the victory of democracy against totalitarian regimes manifests in the countries,” the Vice-Minister said.
The exhibited photographs were taken by thirteen Lithuanian diplomats in twelve countries of various African regions.
The opening of the exhibition was also attended by Member of the Seimas (Parliament) Egidijus Vareikis and Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to Lithuania Samkelisiwe Isabel Mhlanga. After the opening ceremony, singer Viktoras Diawara performed his songs.
On 25 May, the world is celebrating the 48th anniversary of the Organisation of African Union (OAU), which is now known as the African Union. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the 25th of May as Africa Day, which symbolizes the struggle for freedom and independence, economic and social progress of African countries.
