A TRUMPET OF THE MILLENNIUM WILL REMIND THE LITHUANIAN YOUTH IN LATVIA OF THEIR NATIVE COUNTRY
On 9 January, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas started his visit to Latvia by meeting teachers and senior pupils at the Lithuanian Secondary School in Riga.
Inviting pupils to remember the history of Lithuania, the Minister invited them to visit an exhibition “Lithuania. Culture and History”, dedicated to the Millennium of Lithuania, which opens today at the Latvian War Museum.
As a gift from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Minister V.Ušackas presented a trumpet to the school, because the headmistress Bronislava Aldona Terija, has an idea to establish a school orchestra. The trumpet, symbolically called the trumpet of the Millennium, is the first instrument of the future school orchestra.
“Let this gift remind you of Lithuania, celebrating its Millennium,” said the Minister while presenting the gift.
The pupils promised that in their school – the little Embassy of Lithuania – the Lithuanian language will always be spoken.
The Minister also thanked representatives from the Latvian authorities for allowing the Lithuanian children to study at the Lithuanian school.
This year, 289 pupils study at the Lithuanian Secondary School in Riga. In 1991, after the establishment of the school, it was attended by 7 pupils.
During the working visit to Riga, the Minister is meeting with President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers, Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Riekstins. The Minister will also hold conversations with the Lithuanian businessmen working in Latvia and will take part in the opening of the exhibition “Lithuania. Culture and History”, dedicated to the Millennium of Lithuania.
