A stronger Lithuanian voice in the global fight against drugs with election to the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs
At the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) dedicated management meeting in New York on 4 April, Lithuania became a new member of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for 2026-2029.
Five countries from Eastern Europe—Lithuania, Slovenia, Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus—competed for three vacancies. Slovenia and Ukraine were elected together with Lithuania.
The UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) is the central policy-making body in the UN system on drug-related issues, responsible for formulating global drug policies aimed at reducing drug supply and demand and strengthening international cooperation.
The CND membership allows Lithuania to actively participate in developing global drug policies, share national experiences, and strengthen the European Union's position on the international stage. Lithuania plans to continue the initiatives related to drug control launched during the first term in office.
The CND consists of 53 member states elected for a four-year term. Lithuania has been elected to the Commission for the third time, with the first term from 2008 to 2011 and the second from 2022 to 2025.
