A strong protest was lodged with a representative of the Russian embassy in Vilnius
On 1 August, a representative of the Russian Embassy in Vilnius was summoned to the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a strong protest was lodged over last night's large-scale attack by Russian military forces on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, which damaged various civilian targets, including the Lithuanian Embassy.
The second large-scale attack by Russian aggressors against the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, over the past two days, killed at least nine civilians and injured several dozen more. During the attack carried out last night, two Russian missiles (or jet-powered drones) struck the densely populated Pecherskyi District of Kyiv (5 and 150 meters from the fence of the Lithuanian embassy). The premises and property of the Lithuanian diplomatic mission in Ukraine were damaged.
A note of protest from the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, handed to a Russian representative, strongly condemns the attack carried out by Russia last night, as well as the damage to the Lithuanian Embassy building in Kyiv and the threat to the safety of the Lithuanian diplomatic mission's staff. Such actions constitute a gross violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The note also emphasizes that, after conducting a thorough assessment of the damage sustained, Lithuania will demand that Russia compensate for the damage caused during the shelling and reserves the right to take further retaliatory measures against the Russian Federation.
Lithuania reiterated its demand that Russia immediately halt the escalation of the war it started, cease its aggression against Ukraine, withdraw its occupying forces from all internationally recognized Ukrainian territory, and compensate Ukraine for the damages caused.
