A NEW SCHOOL WILL BE BUILT IN AFGHANISTAN‘S GHOR PROVINCE

On 16 August, Japanese civilians cooperating with the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Chaghcharan  signed a cooperation agreement regarding the construction of a new women's school in the eastern part of the province of Ghor.  The agreement was concluded with one of the non-governmental organizations operating in the province

Deputy Director of Education Department of Ghor Hidgull Azim, civilian representatives of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan and foreign representatives working in PRT, Chief of Staff of the military component of the 11th shift of the Lithuanian-led PRT, Col Nerijus Kačkauskas, and other military staff members took part in the ceremony of signing the contract at the PRT base camp in Chagcharan.

The project, financed by Japan, is worth over 95 thousand USD. The new school is expected to provide facilities for studies of around 400 girls and women. This is the third contract that the Japanese representatives working in the Lithuanian-led PRT sign with non-governmental organizations on building schools in Ghor.

Development of literacy and education is one of the priority sectors that the international community is putting forward in the reconstruction of the country. Currently, there are approximately 620 schools in the province. However, around 90 percent of them lack premises and usually hold lessons in open air.

Representatives from Denmark, Finland, Georgia, Japan, Poland, Ukraine, and the USA work together with Lithuanian military and civilian personnel in the base camp of Ghor PRT.

Four Japanese experts in development cooperation whose activities are linked to the provincial rural development have worked in Ghor PRT since spring 2009.
