A MEETING WITH BRITISH PARLIAMENTARIANS FOCUSES ON LITHUANIA’S INCOMING EU PRESIDENCY AND KEY INTERNATIONAL POLICY ISSUES
On 11 June in Vilnius, the Political Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dalius Čekuolis held a meeting with the delegation of the European Scrutiny Committee of the House of Commons in the Parliament of the United Kingdom that was led by the Chairman of the Committee William Cash. The meeting focused on Lithuania’s incoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union and on other important issues related to international policy.
The Lithuanian official presented to the British parliamentarians the priorities for the Lithuanian incoming Presidency of the EU Council, drew their attention to the importance of ensuring energy security and of developing the Eastern Partnership policy. He also noted that smooth cooperation with all EU member states, including the United Kingdom, would be very important for the achievement of these priorities.
Among other things, the guests took interest in Lithuania’s position on the situation in Syria, relations with Russia and other Eastern neighbours, and the strengthening of the EU’s role in international politics. According to Čekuolis, in order to be a fair mediator for the next 6 months the Lithuanian EU Presidency will seek to reflect optimally the interests of the EU in relations both with the third countries, and with international organizations.
