A JOINT MEETING BETWEEN THE CBSS COMMITTEE OF SENIOR OFFICIALS AND THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION WAS HELD IN BRUSSELS

On 26 January, a meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) was held in Brussels. It was chaired by Ambassador Neris Germanas, Head of the Secretariat for . The participants of the meeting approved recommendations for joint activities with observer countries and regional organizations in order to arrange the cooperation with them in the best possible manner. The CBSS Information and communication strategy was also discussed, as well as further cooperation with Russia’s Kaliningrad region, the activities of the recently established Expert Group on Maritime Policy, the report of Task Force against Trafficking in Human Beings and other current issues.

As the tenure of the current Director of the CBSS Secretariat Gabriele Kötschau ends on 31 August 2010, it was decided to announce a competition for this position. Deadline for submission of application: 29 March 2010.

On 27 January, the joint meeting of the CBSS Committee of Senior Officials and the representatives of the European Commission was held. The participants discussed the implementation of Northern Dimension and the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The participants also exchanged opinions on the cross-border cooperation programmes, discussed the integrated maritime policy and regional energy issues.

The annual meetings between the European Commission and the representatives of the CBSS are held with the aim of sharing information and better coordination of the implementation of programmes.

On 28 January, Chairman of the CBSS Committee of Senior Officials, Ambassador N.Germanas took part in the meeting of the Enlarged Standing Committee of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference and presented the report on the activities of the CBSS during Lithuania’s Presidency.

Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) was established in 1992 in Copenhagen as an informal regional political forum. Its main aim is to promote integration processes and to build closer relations in the region. Today, the CBSS activities include all areas of inter-governmental cooperation in the Baltic Sea region, except the military defence.

The CBSS members are 11 states (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden) and the European Commission.
