9TH ASIA-EUROPE SUMMIT ENDORSES LITHUANIA’S PROPOSAL TO HOLD A WORKSHOP ON NUCLEAR SAFETY IN LITHUANIA
At the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) on 6 November in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė presented Lithuania’s initiative to host an ASEM workshop on nuclear safety. Many countries welcomed and supported the proposal.
Lithuania’s forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2013 plans to hold a workshop on international mechanisms for ensuring compliance with standards of nuclear safety.
Today, nuclear safety is one of the key challenges in the international arena, on the agendas of bilateral and multilateral meetings, and international organizations, as well as one of the priorities of the external dimension of the EU energy policy and the programme of Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU Council.
Skaisgirytė Liauškienė stressed that Lithuania actively engaged in initiatives to strengthen nuclear safety, drafting and implementing the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, tightening international nuclear safety standards and ensuring transparency and publicity. The Vice-Minister pointed out that all nuclear power plants, their construction plans, construction sites and staff capabilities to ensure safe operation should be verified by stress tests and assessed by an IAEA expert mission.
The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), a bi-annual event, is taking place under the theme Friends for Peace, Partners for Prosperity. At the event, representatives from 48 ASEM partners are discussing the financial situation, global and regional issues.
