A commemoration of the National Memorial Day for the Genocide of the Lithuanian Jews and the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilna Ghetto will take place in the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union on 23 September. During the event, an exhibition of paintings by Solomonas Teitelbaumas will be opened and a screening of a documentary “Fania’s Vilnius” by Edita Mildažytė will take place.

Members of the Belgian Jewish Community, representatives of the European Jewish Congress, representatives of EU institutions, diplomats and members of the Lithuanian community will attend the event at the invitation of the Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the EU and Danguolė Vinciuniene, Chargée d’Affaires a.i. of Lithuania to Belgium. The Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and the head of the Lithuanian delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Neris Germanas and Raya Kalenova, the Executive Vice President of the European Jewish Congress will give speeches at the event, which will be followed by a video address by Faina Kukliansky, Chair of the Lithuanian Jewish Community.

The painter Solomonas Teitelbaumas (born in 1972) is one of the most talented Lithuanian painters of the new generation. His works follow the tradition of the Jewish painters born in the historic territories of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The documentary “Fania’s Vilnius” (2013) will invite to take a tour of Vilnius as remembered by Fania Jocheles Brantsovski. She is one of the few Lithuanian Jews who escaped death during the liquidation of Vilna Ghetto.

The Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania designated 2013 as the Year of Remembrance of the Vilna Ghetto and the Government drafted a broad programme to honour the memory of the victims of the Vilna Ghetto. In 1994, the 23rd of September was declared National Memorial Day for the Genocide of Lithuanian Jews.

The IV World Litvak Congress dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilna Ghetto is held on 22-25 September in Vilnius.
