40th ANNIVERSARY OF ELISÉE TREATY COMMEMORATED

40th ANNIVERSARY OF ELISÉE TREATY COMMEMORATED On 22 January, the 40th anniversary of the Franco-German Treaty on close co-operation signed at the Elisée Palace was marked. "It is symbolic that we are commemorating this anniversary, when the impressions of the Copenhagen Summit are still fresh and simultaneously the architecture of future European Union is being discussed. The reconciliation between France and Germany preconditioned peace for Europe troubled by wars, a successful cooperation between these countries also considerably ensured the success of the European Union and allowed to think that an enlarged EU would also become a successful project", Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis pointed out on the occasion of the anniversary. Minister believes, that France and Germany "feeling responsibility for Europe" would consolidate standpoints on the EU of all current and future EU members in order for this entity to become "more efficient, influential and understandable to its citizens".
