On 9 September 1991, Syria recognized Lithuania de jure.
Diplomatic relations were established on 25 May 1993.
From 2006 to 2010, Dainius Ginutis Voveris served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Syria after the re-establishment of independence (resided in Egypt).
From 2004 to 2007, Mohamad Ali Hamoui served as the first Ambassador of Syria to Lithuania (resided in Poland).
