Romania recognized Lithuania de jure on 26 August 1991.

Diplomatic relations were established оn 13 September 1991.

From 1996 to 2000, Antanas Valionis served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Romania after the re-establishment of independence (resided in Poland).

From 1992 to 1997, Chargé d’Affaires Nicolae Craciun served as the first Romanian representative to Lithuania.
