Lithuania recognized Montenegro de jure on 22 June 2006.

Diplomatic relations were established on 18 July 2006.

From 2007 to 2008, Darius Jonas Semaška served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Montenegro (resided in Hungary).

From 2008 to 2010, Milorad Šćepanović served as the first Ambassador of Montenegro to Lithuania (resided in Montenegro).
