Moldova was the first among the former Soviet Republics to recognize Lithuania de jure on 31 May 1990.
Diplomatic relations were established on 8 July 1992.
From 1997 to 2001, Vytautas Plečkaitis served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Moldova (resided in Ukraine).
From 1995 to 1998, Ion Leșanu served as the first Ambassador of Moldova to Lithuania (resided in Minsk).
