Diplomatic relations:
Japan recognized Lithuania de jure on 6 September 1991.
Diplomatic relations were re-established on 10 October 1991.
From 2001 to 2006, Algirdas Kudzys served as the first Ambassador of Lithuanian to Japan.
From May to December 1992, Yoshifumi Matsuda served as the first Ambassador of Japan to Lithuania (resided in Russia).
