On 5 January 1923 Costa Rica recognized Lithuania de jure.
Costa Rica did not recognize de jure the incorporation of Lithuania into the Soviet Union.
On 21 February 1992, Costa Rica recognized the re-established independent State of Lithuania.
Diplomatic relations were re-established on 17 May 1992.
From 1992 to 1995, Jose Miguel Umana-Gil served as the first Ambassador of Costa Rico to Lithuania (resided in Norway).
