Azerbaijan recognized Lithuania de jure on 10 September 1991.

Diplomatic relations were established on 27 November 1995.

From 2000 to 2006, Halina Kobeckaitė served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Azerbaijan (resided in Turkey).

From 2007 to 2011, Naira Shakhtahtinskaya served as the first Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Lithuania.
