Permanent Representatives of Baltic States and Poland in Geneva discussed the situation at the border with Belarus with the representatives of UNHCR and IOM
On 8 November, in reaction to the events at the Polish border, the Permanent Representatives of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland in Geneva urgently met with UNHCR‘s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Ms Gillian Triggs and the IOM‘s Senior Regional Advisor for Europe and Central Asia Mr Manfred Profazi.
During the meetings, sharply deteriorating situation on the EU-Belarus border was discussed, as Belarusian regime is moving towards active offensive and provocative actions.
„International organizations should urgently react to the situation, clearly identify the perpetrators and take all possible measures in order to stop the provocative actions of Belarus that put health and lives of migrants at risk and undermine the security of the European Union countries,“ - stressed the Chargé d'Affaires of Lithuania in Geneva Mr Donatas Tamulaitis.
The Permanent Representatives unequivocally condemned the use of asylum-seekers and migrants to achieve political ends and encouraged international organizations to collect and publicize facts about the offensive actions of the Belarusian regime and work with the states of origin in disseminating information about the dangerous migratory routes though Belarus.
